Hilp in Cormyr
Hilp stands at the meeting of Calantar’s Way and the Way of the Manticore, marking the western end of that long road which runs eastward through Wheloon and beyond into Sembia. It lies between Suzail to the southwest and Immersea to the northeast, just north of the Starwater River and near the southeastern fringe of the King’s Forest.
The town is named, depending on whom one believes, either for a long-ago court jester granted lands here or for a warrior who cleared the region of trolls in earlier days. What is certain is that Hilp has long since outgrown such colorful origins and become a place devoted almost entirely to trade.
It is a bustling settlement of tall, narrow, slate-shingled shops with living quarters above them, pressing outward beyond its defensive walls and straggling along both major roads. Though once unfortified, Hilp has since raised walls for its defense, though these are now steadily outpaced by its expansion.
Character of the Town
Hilp is a market town serving the surrounding farmlands and grazing pastures. Its streets are filled with merchants, teamsters, and farmers bringing goods to market or carrying them onward toward Suzail, Immersea, and the Dragon Coast.
The folk of Hilp are known for their relentless attention to trade. Bargaining is constant, and few transactions are concluded without effort on both sides to extract the last possible coin. The town’s prosperity rests on this steady flow of commerce, though it lends the place a somewhat hard-edged character.
Barrel-making and wagon-building are among the principal trades carried out here, supporting both local agriculture and the caravans that pass through.
Landmarks
Hilp itself forms its chief landmark, a dense and ever-growing cluster of buildings stretching along the roads. The original walls now enclose only part of the settlement, and new structures continue to rise beyond them.
To the west, near the edge of the forest, lie the fenced fields where stelk is cultivated, though these lands are not within the town proper. The surrounding countryside consists of open farmland and pasture, giving way gradually to the trees of the King’s Forest.
Governance
Hilp is governed by a local lord appointed by the Crown. In recent years this position has been held by Doon Dzavar, a former merchant not native to Cormyr, who nonetheless earned the approval of both townsfolk and king through steady administration.
He is assisted by a herald, the wizard Baldask Delzantar, who handles records and official matters in the Crown’s name.

Shops
The Slipper Shop
This establishment is run by an elderly elf woman of great age, who speaks of Myth Drannor as if it were a recent memory. Her manner is calm and deliberate, and she deals with customers in a way that stands apart from the sharper habits of Hilp’s merchants.
She sells cosmetics, herbs, scents, pomanders, and medicines, all carefully packed into embroidered cloth slippers. Those who approach her properly may also obtain magical potions, though such wares are not displayed openly and must be requested with due courtesy.
Handiber’s Stelk Farm (Sales Outlet)
Handiber, a gruff and dry-witted farmer, maintains only a sales outlet in Hilp. His actual fields lie to the west, where he cultivates stelk in three well-fenced plots.
Stelk grows as clusters of small, cabbage-like heads, brown or bronze in color and roughly the size of a man’s fist. It has an oily texture and a strong, unpleasant odor, though a few dwarven recipes make use of it in cooking.
Its true value lies in its use as bait. Aquatic creatures of all kinds—from small fish to great beasts such as dragon turtles—are drawn irresistibly to it. Creatures that consume stelk lose the ability to generate or discharge electricity for a time, making it especially valuable in controlling dangerous species such as the electric eels of the Lake of Dragons.
Handiber’s crops are widely regarded as superior. Through careful breeding, he has produced strains that retain their potency longer, allowing merchants to transport them farther and store them longer than wild varieties. Though stelk grows in other places, including the shores of the Lake of the Long Arm, these cultivated plants are more reliable and command higher prices.
Trade and Exports
Hilp serves as a market center for the surrounding farmland, dealing in grain, livestock, and other agricultural goods brought in by local farmers. Its cooperage and wagon-making trades are well developed, supplying barrels and transport equipment for both local use and caravan trade.
The most notable export is stelk, which is sold at high prices due to its effectiveness as fish bait and its specialized uses. Goods from the Slipper Shop, particularly potions and prepared herbs, also find their way into wider trade through select buyers.
