Gray Oaks in Cormyr
Once known as Black Oaks, this village of some four hundred halflings has suffered greatly in recent years. During the Time of Troubles it was largely destroyed by fire and wild magic, and not long after it was struck again by a violent magical clash. Accounts differ as to what truly occurred—some speak of a priest of Cyric attacking war wizards, others of Zhentarim involvement, and a few even whisper that Cyric himself was present—but all agree that the devastation left the settlement a shadow of its former self.
Today, only a small remnant of the community remains. A handful of halfling woodcarvers still dwell among the ruins, along with a few hardy human families who make what living they can from the land.
Trade and Livelihood
In earlier days, Gray Oaks was widely known as the breadbasket of Northbank, the halfling-settled farmlands lying between the Starwater and the King’s Forest. It was once the largest farmers’ market in all Cormyr, drawing caravans from across the realm.
Some trade continues, though in a much reduced form. A few storage sheds have been built to shelter foodstuffs awaiting caravan wagons, but the prominence Gray Oaks once enjoyed has passed to Jester’s Green farther south, which now serves as the primary market of the region.
Those who remain in Gray Oaks rely on more modest means. Mushrooms are gathered from the rocks and nearby growths, and the glowing moss found in the area is carefully harvested. This moss has some value, as its distillate is used in spell inks and in magical items concerned with light, providing a small but reliable source of income.

The Village Today
Much of Gray Oaks consists of blasted ruins and overgrown remnants of former homes and market spaces. The remaining inhabitants live among these remains, repairing what they can and making use of what still stands. The village has a quiet, worn character, shaped by the hardships it has endured.
The Trailswatch Inn
Aside from the ruins, the only notable establishment is a small inn known as the Trailswatch. It serves Suzailans of middling means who have secured one of the few hunting licenses granted to commoners each year.
Guides licensed by the Crown reside at the inn and operate from it on a more or less permanent basis. These guides are widely believed to be undercover Purple Dragons, and they lead licensed hunters along established forest trails.
Hunting in the Northbank
The hunting provided through the Trailswatch is carefully managed. A deepspawn is kept hidden in a forest cave some dozen miles north of the inn. This creature produces deer, boar, and bear, ensuring that hunters are able to bring down suitable game during their excursions. The arrangement is not openly discussed, but it is known among those familiar with the workings of the area.
The Inn Itself
The Trailswatch is furnished in a manner that reflects its purpose. The walls, floors, and ceilings are adorned with the pelts and heads of large forest beasts, including owlbears and wolves, while tapestries depict kings of Cormyr hunting boars, wyverns, and other quarry from horseback.
The food is adequate and plentiful, and the inn functions as a practical base for hunters and guides. The atmosphere suggests a place maintained with oversight and purpose, and it is commonly believed that the activities of those who pass through are closely observed.
Gray Oaks remains a diminished but inhabited settlement, sustained by small-scale trade, Crown-managed hunting, and the persistence of those who continue to live there.
