Bogbrook in Cormyr

Bogbrook is a marsh village in Cormyr where reeds, bogs, and muddy waterways stretch across the countryside. The settlement has long been mocked by city folk as the home of rustic bumpkins, and more than one young man who left the village hoping to win honor at court ended up serving in the Purple Dragons under the joking nickname “Lord Bogbrook.”

Despite its reputation, the village is widely known for its excellent melons and giant marrows. During harvest season, groaning carts depart daily along the muddy tracks carrying produce to the markets of nearby Marsember.

Bogbrook is also famous for producing a harsh black wine called utterdark, sometimes referred to less politely as “black Bogbrook water.” The wine has a powerful, almost salty taste that few enjoy at first—but those who grow fond of it develop a lasting enthusiasm. Admirers of utterdark can be found across the Inner Sea lands, including Sembia, Westgate, Amn, Chessenta, and even distant Waterdeep.

The wine’s strong flavor can mask the taste of spoiled food, making it especially popular with quartermasters of ships that sail the Sea of Fallen Stars. In Bogbrook a ceramic bottle sells for about 1 gp, though the price can rise to 2 gp in Sembia and as much as 6 gp in Waterdeep. Many traders traveling east through Cormyr purchase bottles here and resell them at a tidy profit.

Each family in Bogbrook prepares its own variation of utterdark, adding secret spices and ingredients such as crushed mustard seed or berry juice. Among enthusiasts, the vintages produced by the Jhalonson and Ittreer families are especially respected, while a newer blend created by the Athantal family has recently gained popularity.

Visitors often find Bogbrook to be a bleak and unkempt place. Tall grasses and wet bogs surround the village, and muddy tracks wind through the marshland. The safer paths are marked with wooden posts—though leaning posts often indicate ground that is slowly sinking into the muck below. While travelers occasionally disappear into the bogs, those who stay on the marked routes and travel by daylight rarely encounter trouble.

The village itself consists of damp cottages built of stone, timber, and turf. Many homes are banked with earth and planted with melons and tomato vines, giving them the appearance of small garden-covered hills. Around each house lie melon patches and cranberry bogs, while some families use small skiffs to pole through the wetlands in search of catfish, bog crayfish, lunk trout, frogs, and other marsh creatures.

Only two structures stand out in Bogbrook. One is the village inn. The other is the crooked tower of Thelgarl the Thaumaturge, an abandoned wizard’s home that leans precariously above a dark pool. Thelgarl died more than a century ago, and locals insist the crumbling tower is haunted. At least one gargoyle is said to guard the place, and few villagers dare approach the ruins in search of whatever magic may still lie within.

The Utter Inn

This damp and somewhat gloomy inn takes its name from the utterdark wine commonly served here. Travelers often find the inn’s mulled cider and warm ale far more enjoyable than the infamous wine. Unfortunately, the guest rooms are cramped, poorly lit, and prone to mildew.
