Redspring in Cormyr
Named for the rusty hue of its waters, Redspring is a raw, rising settlement at the edge of the northern moors. The iron-rich soil around the springs stains the water a deep red—like diluted blood—and imparts a metallic tang. Yet, despite its unsettling taste, the water is pure and nourishing, flowing even in the heart of winter. It serves as the source of the Sunset Stream, which eventually feeds into the Starwater.
A Moot Reborn
Historically a shepherds’ moot, Redspring was long abandoned due to frequent raiding from the nearby Stonelands. But times are changing. Redspring has been selected by the Crown for expansion, much like Dawngleam far to the south. Earthworks now rise swiftly, forming the outline of a future town within a broad ring of earthen ramparts, hastily thrown up by Crown-directed labor crews.
Trade, magic and the crown
A Purple Dragon garrison has established a foothold here in a compact keep, tasked with defending workers and settlers. Their presence has not entirely reassured the influx of merchants, many of whom arrive with their own private guards. What began as a trickle of cautious traders has become a full-fledged gold rush, accelerated by the Crown’s boon grants—funds from the royal treasury for the establishment of shops and businesses.
The biggest change came with the arrival of four War Wizards, now housed in a newly constructed manor at the town’s heart. Their presence is a powerful deterrent to raiders, but it has also drawn attention from above. Locals whisper of mysterious mages mounted on feywings, winged beasts circling overhead, quietly observing the growth below—neither attacking nor aiding.
A Town Half-Built
Yet for all its promise, Redspring remains a frontier post, wild and unfinished. There is no true inn, and the town’s only tavern consists of a weather-beaten window that serves drinks to patrons standing in the cold. Stones are scarce, and workers dig deep pits outside the ramparts to quarry what little they can. The roads are muddy tracks, and half-built structures dot the terrain in a chaotic sprawl. Even when construction is complete, transport and navigation may remain troublesome due to the town’s haphazard layout.
Winter hangs heavy on Redspring. Should the Zhentarim regain strength or the weather turn cruel, this burgeoning town may yet fall. But for now, it stands—defiant, hungry, and full of opportunity.
If you follow Tymora, or simply have a gambler’s soul, Redspring may offer your next fortune—or your final folly.
Redspring’s future
If Redspring survives its harsh beginnings, the settlement could one day anchor Cormyr’s hold on the northern frontier. With Crown coin flowing and war wizards watching, all it may take is a stroke of luck—or the arrival of powerful adventurers or enterprising nobles—to tip the balance.
Should such folk choose to stake their banners here, they might shape Redspring into a thriving stronghold… or die trying.
